Thanks J, good tips, and inspired me to sit down and play.
Thanks so much Jeremy. Your “simple” in version sounds great.
I very much like the chords used « in version » two… Great vid, thanks!
Inversion
Funny.
Vinerison!
Inversion!
Inversion. Great video :)
So for Jeremy, of the 2 versions of Waltz for Debby, instrumental and lyrical, the instrumental is the "in" version. I think I am using the word correctly. ;)
oh Jeremy those harmonisations that you play at the end after you modulate to A major are BEAUTIFUL <3 definitely stealing them :D Thank you for this lesson!
@08:07 Waltz for Debby voicing suggestions @14:43 Simple version performance @15:20 More complex performance
Your step 4 was outrageously killing… 🙈
Hoy can you go from right to left?
You look in your prime, I love this! Just started learning it myself
Ellaine and Nenette …. 😉
When you're changing the chords more than just when the chords change, are you doing reharms (i noticed a couple i think) or just shuffling around between chord tones and extensions/tensions on the chord with your right hand?
Ok seriously, I’m a bit late to the party, but this dude kicks serious ass all over the place with this.. I never thought about doing this and I’ve been composing and playing since the late 80s… I am headed to the Roland right now to try this out..

Wonderful.
You play better with one hand than I play with two, and no doubt three if I had them. Very depressing. I've always found this song so pretty, which prompts the thought: lead sheets look deceptively simple, given that all the arranging is left to the performer. Nevertheless, writing a great jazz song is not simple. I wonder if that topic would be worth a tutorial or two.
This is such an important topic and you're the only reliable pianist covering this topic in a lesson! Such a great and detailed one! Thank you!
That was truly amazing and inspiring to hear what you can do with just one hand. I was waiting for the sixteenths, but I guess that's not possible in slippers.
I like these for practice. Any suggestions for how to make these more dynamic? You have another video where you discuss improving mediocre solos by widening the range from the lowest note to the highest note in a phrase. Do you have any exercises for working with our arpeggios over more than this limited range of a seventh,?
I am having a lot of fun lately with upper structures trying a lot of stuff. When i thought about F#add4/C7 i was like oh shit i guess it doesnt work because of that b netural, now that video felt like this just do it meme😂. I guess if you say its ok to have one note not working because the rest of the notes are cool it gives you so many more options to work with like even Bmajadd2 over C7. Great lesson 🙏
Very astute analysis and instruction, almost a classical approach to your methodology for teaching the bebop idiom. I’ve been watching a number of other videos of yours on closely related topics, like the arpeggio patterns, crossing over, crossing under, targeting notes, thirds on downbeats, chromaticism, etc. Your material is terrific, and I love working on it, but one thing that occurs to me is “how do you do this and not sound like everybody else?” Certainly, there’s a lot of possibilities, but are there really so many Possibilities that you don’t sound like everyone else?
Oh Dem Golden Slippers! Thanks Jeremy!
Excellent lesson Jeremy, thanks. I guess it would sound even better if you actually looked at the keyboard.😄
I started as a jazz accordionist. This type of thing was my bread and butter
Great content as always, but the video title might be ill-advised, lmao
Slippers. Thanks you for this. These simple specific exercises that can take ones playing to the next level are very important and great part of your lessons. Congrats on your new baby BTW
Nice slippers! lol
Wow! My genius pianist friend was showing me some techniques like this just last week! Lol but she used a latin/bossa context - chords with bossa rhythm with the 123 and melody with 4&5 just like you 😬😬 wonderful lesson 🩴🩴
Thank you for the corner thumb reminder playing two notes with one thumb. And thanks for the zoomed-in keyboard to illustrate fingering. I really like the quarter / eighth note chord change exercise for the right hand (#3) on the list. What brand of slippers is recommended for playing these exercises? ;)
Thank you for teaching in this great lesson techniques I have no idea existed! Working my was slowly through you beginner book, hope to eventually get one day to your solo book, which I also have and enjoy browsing through.
Excellent lesson, just what I needed!🩴🩴
Well I’m a streamer so I won’t say that word. This spectral stuff might be over my rainbow but nevertheless very interesting.
This so fantastic. Thank you!
Thanks Jeremy. Superb video as usual. Mark Levine recommends using the pentatonic based on the V to play over a II ,V, I. eg G pentatonic played over Dm, G7, CM. Your thoughts?
On Brad Mehldau's solo on Solar, I think on Art of the Trio 4, I'm pretty sure that on at least two different choruses, on the Eb maj chord he plays an E natural major arpeggio, (or part of it). I used to think, wt... was that? For some reason it reminded me of a calliope. Anyone know what I'm talking about, or should I not believe my ears?
There's not a single "answer," but you could file that away under "modal interchange" - thinking Locrian instead of Ionian.
@@JeremySiskind Thanks! That's still wild. Would you ever play a Locrian on a major 7th?? (I've always thought of Locrian as "in" especially for a modal tune like Autumn Leaves, when you get to a chord on the major 7th of the relative major scale. (I hope I know what I'm talking about.) I mean, if it's in E minor, the relative major scale is G, so on the F# minor preceding the V leading back to the I: Locrian sounds right, Dorion or Aeolian sounds wrong, especially their natural 9th. But I guess that's playing in, whereas playing a Locrian on a major 7th would be another way to play out. (???))
@@sheilamacdougal4874it’s actually a relatively common thing at the end of a tune - check out all the Monk tunes that start in C and then end on Db or something similar (“Pannonica” is a great example)
@@JeremySiskind Oh yeah, ok, at the end of a tune it sounds familiar. Thank you as always for your immensely helpful videos and replies.
Would be good to have a backing track for modal lessons to put them more in context
Cool idea! Thanks! I never really use backing tracks, but you're right that it could be helpful for context.
Great lesson. Thank you!!
Thanks for watching, Alex!
One of your best videos!
I'm so glad to hear that! I feared that it was a little scattered, but hopefully it was helpful!
Thanks Jeremy! Cable.
Thanks much for watching, Mark!
Cable! Thanks for the lesson Jeremy! You are seriously an amazing teacher, you present your thoughts so well and your demonstrations are so easy to understand!
I'm honored. Thanks so much for that, Bowl Full of Ice Cream!
Picasso! Thank you. You have made playing “softly as the morning sunrise” much less scary!
Excellent! It's not such a scary tune (although, have you checked out the lyrics? Pretty dramatic! )
@@JeremySiskind the lyrics are powerful and beautifully written. Thanks for sharing that!
Amazing tips, thanks a lot. I am going to teach my studentds following these ideas by your credits.
I'm honored. Thank you and happy teaching!
Thank you Jeremy! Far out! Your curve and the topic reminded me of the graphic that was included with the original Lydian Chromatic Concept book that depicted Ornette Coleman taking an outgoing horizontal melody rocket ride down the Mississippi. Cable.
Ooh, interesting! I don't know that graphic, but I want to find it now!
@@JeremySiskind If you do an image search for, Lydian chromatic concept of tonal organization reverb, on google you’ll find some examples. Look for the cool waves!
@@JeremySiskind If you do an image search for the full title along with the word reverb, you should find examples.
Good cabling, Jeremy! Thanks!
Haha, many thanks, Jan! Thanks for watching!
